Active and Inactive Trades

How active status affects trade visibility, selection, imports, and historical records

Written by Austin Brummer

What active means

Active trades are intended for normal operational use. New trades created manually or by import are active by default.

When to keep a trade active

  • Users still need to raise requisitions or assignments for the role.

  • Rates and requirements are still maintained for the role.

  • The trade is still offered to suppliers or internal users in normal workflows.

  • The company is still actively using the role name.

What inactive means

Inactive trades remain in the system for review and historical records. They should not be used for new operational work unless they are reactivated.

When to make a trade inactive

  • The company no longer uses the role.

  • The role was replaced by another trade name.

  • The trade was added in error but already has related records.

  • The role should remain visible for history but not be selected for new work.

Where status appears

The Trades list includes an Active column. The trade detail Overview tab includes an Active or Inactive toggle for users who can manage the status.

Changing status

Open the trade detail page, change the Active toggle, and save the Overview tab. The change is recorded in trade activity history.

Before deactivating

  • Check whether there are current requisitions or assignments using the trade.

  • Check whether rates or competency requirements still need to remain available for review.

  • Tell affected users which replacement trade should be used, if there is one.

  • Confirm that the change is intended for future work only.

Desk visibility

Desk users choose the connected client company from the Trades filter panel. The company filter is pre-selected to the first available connected client and cannot be cleared. The Trades list shows the company column for desk users. Desk users load active trades only. If a desk user cannot see a trade, check whether the trade is inactive before checking permissions.

Reactivating a trade

To use an inactive trade again, open the trade detail page, switch it back to Active, and save. After reactivation, review rates and requirements before relying on the trade for new work.

Historical records

Changing active status does not remove the trade from existing requisitions, assignments, rates, competency matrices, timesheets, or exports where it has already been used.

Status is not deletion

Inactive status preserves the trade record. Use it when the trade should no longer be used but must remain available for audit, reporting, or historical context.

For agencies: active status and you

Active status is controlled by the hiring company, and it decides which trades you can supply against.

  • You see active trades only, so a trade the company has deactivated will not appear in your view.

  • Activating, deactivating, and reactivating trades are hiring-company actions; agency users cannot change trade status.

  • If a role you supply against has disappeared, it may have been made inactive; confirm the correct company is selected and ask the hiring company.

  • Inactive trades still apply to your historical assignments and timesheets, so past records keep their original trade.
