Standard vs shift-based requisitions

When to use standard headcount-based requisitions or shift-based daily coverage

Written by Austin Brummer

The two modes at a glance

Every requisition runs in one of two fulfilment modes:

  • Standard (Headcount-Based) — track total headcount filled against total headcount required.

  • Shift-Based (Daily Coverage) — track coverage for each working day in the requisition period.

When to use each mode

Pick the mode that matches how the work is staffed:

  • Standard — each submitted worker is expected to cover the whole period, and you only need to track total headcount.

  • Shift-based — workers may only be available for certain dates, different workers may cover different days, or the team needs day-by-day coverage visibility.

  • When shift-based requisitions are disabled in company configuration, the form uses Standard. When enabled, neither mode is preselected: you must choose Standard (Headcount-Based) or Shift-Based (Daily Coverage).

How quantity is interpreted

Quantity behaves differently in each mode:

  • Standard — quantity is the total number of workers required for the requisition.

  • Shift-based — quantity is the default number of workers required per working day. A hirer with quantity amendment permission can set a different requirement for an individual date through Coverage. Other dates retain the default.

How the duration is shown

Date totals include both the start and end dates. Standard requisitions show inclusive calendar days. Shift-based requisitions show only active working days from the selected shift pattern, matching the coverage total.

How agencies submit workers

Agency behaviour also differs:

  • Standard — agencies submit workers to cover the whole requisition period.

  • Shift-based — agencies submit workers with specific date availability, so the hiring team can assign workers only to the dates they can cover.

How coverage and Filled status are tracked

Filled status is calculated differently depending on the mode:

  • Standard — the requisition is Filled when counted assignments meet the quantity. Completed and ended assignments still count, including a cancelled assignment with a completed or ended date.

  • Shift-based — the requisition is Filled when every working day in the date range has enough assigned coverage.

Shift-based coverage statuses

For shift-based requisitions, each working day shows one of these statuses:

  • Covered — assigned workers meet or exceed the required quantity for that day.

  • Partial — at least one worker is assigned, but the day still needs more workers.

  • Uncovered — no workers are assigned for a working day.

Assignment limits

Over-assignment is prevented in both modes, but checks them at different levels:

  • Standard — assignments cannot exceed the remaining total quantity required.

  • Shift-based — assignments cannot exceed the required quantity for any selected date.
